The Electronic Air Waybill (e-AWB) is the digital equivalent of the paper Air Waybill contract. Introduced by IATA, it aims to eliminate paperwork and streamline air cargo logistics.
Benefits of the e-AWB Standard
The transition to e-AWB provides several key operational advantages:
- No Paper Waste: Eliminates the requirement to print multiple paper copies for the airline, customs, shipper, and consignee.
- Greater Accuracy: Digital data entries are validated automatically, reducing spelling mistakes and check-digit discrepancies.
- Real-Time Integration: Electronic records update instantly in airline mainframes (like Emirates or Lufthansa), making cargo status tracking faster.
Is e-AWB Mandatory?
Yes, IATA declared e-AWB as the default standard for all global air cargo shipments starting in 2019. Today, over 90% of international trade routes utilize e-AWBs. Shippers and forwarders transmit electronic messages (Cargo-XML or Cargo-IMP formats) directly to carriers before cargo check-in.
